This is very sad.

I am glad to say that I saw him prior to the accident. This sad news makes my last night with Leroi at Nissan all that much sweeter. I was going to sell my Nissan poster from this year but I will be taking it to be framed tomorrow.

I'm still not going to believe it until I see it on dmb's main page...or an announcement from the WH. But I think I'm just in denial. Like someone said before...TMZ is rarely wrong.

Antsmarching.org is bogged down heavily...from the site:

Leroi Moore: September 7, 1961 – August 19, 2008
By Jake Vigliotti
8/19/08 10:00 pm

It was in 1991 when Dave Matthews approached Leroi Moore and Carter Beauford and asked them about the possibility of joining the band. Both Roi and Carter were well known around the Charlottesville area for playing in local fusion and jazz bands through the 1980s. Roi carried the reputation as a saxophone virtuoso by perfecting his style throughout the entire saxophone family.

Roi first picked up an Alto Saxophone in 1974, while in Junior High School. He quickly learned the Baritone Sax, and then moved on to the Tenor Saxophone. During his brief time at James Madison University, Roi completed the saxophone family by learning the Soprano Saxophone.

Roi is mainly recalled as being the ‘shy’ one by DMB fans, but nothing could be further from the truth. Moore spoke to the crowd during early shows (11.7.92 for example). For the first 4 years of the band he essentially played a “lead Saxophone”, taking on the solos that most bands would reserve for a lead guitarist.

What many fans don’t know is that Moore made friends throughout the DMB community. Despite the fact that he wore shades during DMB shows, he was very approachable. It wasn’t unknown for Roi to befriend a DMB fan, and then give that person his phone number or email address.

He will be missed by the entire DMB community for his epic jams, great rhythm, and laid back style. There are just too many songs to even mention that will never, ever, be the same.

Roi Moore was 46.

The views and comments expressed in this article do not necessarily represent those of antsmarching.org.

Song meaning/words and Roi solo makes it a fitting choice.

since i stumbled on the news here earlier tonight i am in complete shock. just been thinking and reliving watching Roi weave his magic in Toronto in June...we were right up front on Roi's side and we marvelled at his beautiful talents all night long...to think I'll never have that privilege again...

Thank you Roi...words just don't cut it when it comes to describing how much you'll be missed

welcome cpxc.

I'm officially new here but have been lurking here for quite some time. There's good people here. Real good.

Sounds so trite or cliché that tragedies bring people together but it is true. Especially tonight. All DMB fans are just trying to find a place to be with our friends and family at this terrible time.

It makes it more comfortable because we all know what each other is feeling. It makes me sick to think of the discussions I'll have with other people (non DMB fans) over the next couple days and the meaningless crap they'll complain about. It's best I keep it to myself cuz they won't understand...that's why I'm here with all of you.

wtf

i would think so..

my question is whether the band will remain together...

Rob D
Aug 20, 2008, 07:56 AM
you know, the more and more i think about it. i keep saying "they'll hang it up b/c of this", but if i know dave matthews, the man cannot sit still for more than a few months. he needs to be on the road, it's what keeps him sane. i have a feeling they'll take an extended (read: no winter tour) break, but will probably be back in the summer, w/ a new album, all dedicated to roi. coffin may be asked to become permanent and juggle his bela schedule...

I've wrestled with the same thoughts...in one hand...why would they go on? on the other...why wouldn't they?

Would a fitting tribute to LM be to stop playing? or just change the name of the band and make it a quartet...or replace him and change the name? I don't think so...but of course I'm biased...I want to enjoy many more summers (and winters) with DMB and enjoy time with my wife while traveling around to see them play.

Only time will tell.

Can anyone find the setlist from last night? I can't seem to find it anywhere...antsmarching.org has the 8-16 show up...and I know they started the setlist last night.

From the DMB Road page

"We are mourning our fallen brother. As we sat this afternoon, contemplating the news we had just received, we wondered how we could possibly do a show today. Dave put it into perspective stating, "There's no place I'd rather be than here with you guys right now." We cherish special memories of our lost friend. Tonight, Dave told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where the cash register was near the stage, and LeRoi leaned on the register because "standing had become a chore" and then played the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said, "that was the day I fell in love with him." It's safe to say we all were in love with him. "It's always easier to leave, than to be left." -DM
