We're promised "new" Lions football year after year. Things I promise will never change about Lions football:

1.) On third down and more than 15 to go... a HB draw will be run.

2.) On third down and inches... a 15-yard post pattern will be thrown.

3.) On third down with 6-10 yards to go... a 3-yard in pattern will be thrown.

But, on the bright side, I probably won't have to watch much third down action this year... and not because we'll be scoring touchdowns in the first two...

Oh, Barry! How we miss thee!!

This is the first time in 12 years that I haven't played fantasy football or held a survival pool or anything of the like. I feel dirty, not playing.

We had a scare at work recently... some info leaked and a list of our names popped up on the GM's desk. Our Gaming Licenses were threatened. So... in the best interest of keeping my job, I stayed away this year.

Why would you fire him three games into the season? It's not like this was the first bad showing he's had...fire him after last season so the new coach can come in and draft the way he wants.

trpnwillie
Sep 29, 2008, 09:49 AM
A couple of years ago, ownership said that Matt Millen was the man for the job. And that they would never fire him. Millen followed that up by stating that he was the man for the job and that he would never step down.

Last week a reporter asked the owner's son about the situation. His response was basically that 'If I had the power, he'd be gone. But I don't. So he's still here.'

The next day daddy fired Millen.

Worst team in professional sport since Millen's hiring: 31-84

That day was like my Super Bowl. This season is already a wash and I'm fine with that. The healing process can now begin. I think they need to give both the GM and Head Coach duties to the same individual. The same guy who retired at the top of his game and said he may come back if presented a challenge. I daresay the Lions fit that description. Next year: Bill Cowher! :lol

I was so pissed I didn't even watch any football today. The three games I got here locally at 1 o'clock:

Titans at Bears
Packers at Vikings
Packers at Vikings

Sad. And to top it all off, I missed getting to watch Drew Stanton today. I have a bit of what doctors would call a man crush on him. Oh well. At least my Spartans get to screw things up for Penn State on the 22nd.

I'm from VA and a die hard Redskins fan. I live in MI now and I feel for you guys. Not only was Millen bad for the Lions, he was bad for the NFL. The Lions are beyond awful. Marinelli needs to go because he's a stubborn fuck. Obviously what he's doing isn't working and has never worked. The Lions need to do what the Dolphins did last year and scrap EVERYTHING. That will be the only way to bring back the fans. Like you said Willie, you get yourself hyped up every year, but next year is going to be different because so many Lions fans are done. They can't take it anymore, and I don't blame them. Why? Because the players on the team are done. The whole team is made up of players waiting to get traded. No one wants to play. Sean Rogers played it smart. Sit on the bench when it mattered. Got traded and is playing the way he should. Everyone needs to go to put some hope back in the team and maybe salvage what faith the fans have left.

VA Legend

And I don't mean to kick you when you're down, but the one of the reasons this is bad for the NFL is because it's bad for every other division in the NFC. It's almost two free wins for the Vikings, Bears, and Packers. And for someone who is a Redskins fan like me, that doesn't seem fair if one of those three teams gets a wild card spot by one win. And for anyone who has seen a division home game for the Lions in recent years, there are more fans from the opposing team in the stands. That should never happen. If Ford didn't own the team, they'd be in LA right now.

I agree with every point you've brought up. However, if the Redskins miss a Wild Card by one game to an NFC North team... tough titties. I don't mean for that to sound harsh, but it's a fact of all sport. Over time, it's cyclical. There are teams out there playing the Rams twice, the Bengals twice, so on and so forth.

Look at teams with barely enough points to make the playoffs in the NHL take a 3 seed because they won their division. Worse yet, look at teams in MLB's National League East Division this year: they got to play the Senators how many times?

Other then that, you're spot on. The Lions are a disgrace. I love how we signed Daunte Culpepper. Here's a guy who Randy Moss PROVED he made. Since Moss left Minnesota, Culpepper went through 2 different NFL teams and if memory serves, all three ligaments in his right knee. I understand that he can be a mentor to a younger quarterback that Jon Kitna or Dan Orlovsky couldn't. Fact remains that Culpepper's signing is of no signifigance whatsoever. He's worthless to us now, and worthless to us for the future. What we need to do is get Stanton under center, even if his NFL career goes no further than this season. The only thing that the Culpepper signing showed me is that we will most certainly be taking a quarterback #1 overall next year. And whoever that is, they will be under center from day one.

There really isn't much hope left in some of the people in this area. No joke. I was so happy for them when the Redwings won the Stanley cup this year, and I don't even like the Redwings. The Lions are in shambles. I saw an interview with their center (don't know his name) and he was talking about how he was a winner throughout his pre-NFL career. He's been on the Lions for 8 years now, and I would swear from the expression on his face that the whole experience has soured his love for the game on some level. That is truly a sad story. I just don't know what they can do at this point. At least they got a good deal for Roy Williams (the Cowboys are idiots, but then I alread know that, don't I!?)

Hallelujah Hollaback! I am a hawks fan and Bill Wirtz was the worst thing that happened to sport in Chicago since Wrigley got all crazy and said no goats in the stadium and though I'd never wish death upon anyone, That was one of the best things that could have happened to that franchise and its fans. That man was out to run the franchise into the ground.

I think their problem (like many in the NFC North) has been in talent development. They drafted, Calvin Johnson, Mike Williams, Roy Williams, Charles Rogers, and Joey Harrington just in the last 6 drafts. Those would have been good for the NFL's most potent passing offense in the history of the league under better coaching (I know that's not true because if they did better, they wouldn't have as many pieces, but...).

Cherilus will prove to be a great anchor, but Ernie Sims should have had more of an impact last year too.

I just can't figure out why they didn't get Rod Marinelli more pieces to work with on the D side too. They completely wasted the talent of a Defensive legend. :confused

The right side has him now though. YAR!:alpha

They've got a culture of losing that won't stop until they overhaul the entire front office. Rebranding the franchise is an important step, but the damage of the last 20 years or so will be felt for years to come.

I liked what Detroit did today. To me, it would have made more sense to take Stafford 1 and then take Oher at 20, and then trade their 2nd and 3rd picks (which would be picks 33 and 65) to the Patriots for the 23 pick and then take Pettigrew then. That way all three are going into it together and you have the guy protecing Stafford's blind side for the next 10 years, along with his dump off guy that he will no doubt need.

Of course, the real highlight of the draft:

Depending upon how all of their new talent is coached, they might make a hell of a run at the division this year.
