Hey guys! I just got a Splash that Hirschy hooked me up with back from the framer. I used a local framer and we had a plan of what we were going to do ( I was thinking about getting it floated) but, the print would not stay flat (thinking it was the paint) so they matted it. They said we could change things around since it's not what we had originally planned. I think it looks great though, what do you think! I'm definately looking for some criticism if you got it. The pics aren't the best, bad camera and worse photographer :)

Thanks
Brett

lol, he mentioned you popped in and saw him the other day. I can't wait to see it. I feel bad cause I was losing my patience a little bit cause he was sorta giving me a runaround (I wasnt mean, just like "dude, wtf you say one thing and do another"). I know as soon as I see it Im going to feel like an ass though. lol. He seems like a good kid, he just had life stuff going on. I prob could have been more patient

Yeah man, he was terribly sick- like bed ridden sick! Plus, he's got personal stuff
going on as well. But hey, I also understand the point of view from the buyers side.. .
don't make a commitment if you can't keep it. All in all, it was an unfortunate situation
that no one could have anticipated.

And yes, like you said: "once you see it, you're gonna feel like an arse". Lol. It seriously is
that good.. . It really amazes me how he's able to cut these mats- he really is talented!

ps. I have picuture of it, but you're gonna have to wait until it arrives to see it :)

1) I didnt know it was that serious. I'll shoot him an email in a bit.

2) I agree, but it wasnt serious or anything. Often times I come across more aggressive than I intend to (just ask methane). I still plan on working with him in the future (even before I saw the teaser/heard your review of it)

3) Good, don't send em, lol. I want to be surprised. Im glad Link didnt send a whole pic like I asked him too (I always used to sneak a peek at my x-mas gifts too)

Thanks - Also it makes your eye move up or down rather than left to right. In this case it makes it move up and down real quick then down. The up and down helps stop your eye from moving past it after looking at the 3 above the couch which encourage your eye to go left to right back to left to right... The 3 vertical columns of sideways text compliment the vertical candle holders and helps continue the circle of movement your eye makes when looking at that side of the room.

But I like "because" better...

I'm just that good:lol Just kidding. I made two 'L' mats and layered them on top of the main mat. I had a mat that I had made channels in and had color behind each channel... to replicate the 'tube system' from the print. Got way too busy, but was kinda cool. Not the best picture in the world, taken with my phone. Had to get this in a frame quick, so I went the American Frame route. Used 1/8 inch spacers, UV plexi, and acid free backing.

Due to a mishap during assembly involving the glass slipping and shaving some skin off me, I think I'm going to have to replace the mat -- there's the tiniest bit of blood on it. :twitch

However, I love the way this looks. The frame design very much reminded me of the curved faun horns. Best of all, the frame was $20 and the acid-free double mat was $5. :banana Next up -- framing my Horkey Pan's Labyrinth in a complimentary style so I can hang these together. :sadie

50% off frame sale at Michael's made the frame $19.99. The frame was a standard 16x20 size, and Michael's sells pre-cut mats for standard size frames. The double mat was around $7-8, and I had a coupon for 40% off any regular price item that I used on the mat. I don't have UV glass or plexi on the frame yet, and if I want to be thorough, I need to replace the standard backer with acid-free foamboard and seal the back up with paper. That will come later though. :)

Framed up some stuff last night. Framing a print so I can look at it on my wall makes me happier than scoring the actual print, honestly. ;)

Found this frame and white mat in my closet. It had been used for another print before, but it will hold my Danger Snow Patrol OKC nicely for now. :)

My first frame, unfortunately I didn't read on here first so I took it to Michaels. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out, but I'm indifferent on the tickets. I wanted the program and the poster in the same frame so I needed a way to fill the open space. This is the one that's going to start it all, now I have 3 frames on order from American Frame for some DMB posters and a stack of McCarthy prints that I've bought over the last week.

You almost can't compare the show to a normal concert because it's a theatrical production. I bought the poster when they did a 2nd run and sold them online, I ordered the program at the same time.

That turned out sharp. and dont worry about taking it to michaels/joannes. I have many posters some taken there and some taken to local pro framers. The main difference is the peace of mind you get taking it to a local shop, because they seem more interested in the actual artwork and i would assume are better at handling it. As far as the finished product, i have never had a complaint about the quality of materials used or framing at michaels. Maybe i am in the minority with having good experiences everywhere i have taken stuff to.

anyways, it did turn out very nice.

I don't have any complaints with the job that they did, but I was a little worried after reading all the horror stories and the cost was more than I expected. Even with the 60% off custom framing it was still $270 to get it done. Now that I've learned about American Frame I'm going to be ordering from them and just assembling the frame myself.

Bluecow003

The 60% off Michaels offers is a sham by the way. It's always 60% off. If you do the math to figure out what the "regular" price would be, it's an astronomical price that would make even the local custom framers laugh.

dythuger

So, I went to the framer this weekend with the Danger uncut Fenway and my Horkey Pan's Labyrinth. While I was trying to find a moulding for Pan's, guess what I stumbled upon? A dark version of the "arcane" moulding I posted in here a few days ago! :lol I decided to use it for the Pan's print, but I'm pretty damn excited that a) I know who the manufacturer of the moulding is now, and b) with two different colors, I could use the orange for the Paradise Lost Gallery Edition and the dark brown for the Online/Artist edition. :banana

Just got done finishing up some more framing. I ordered everything from American Frame and put it all together, another great experience with AF.

First was Keyes - Evacuation I, I gambled with the Basics - Coffee frame based on the pictures in their catalog and I really like how it turned out. The color is hard to capture since I don't have the greatest lighting in the room.

I used the same frame for McCarthys' Stand By Me, I really like how this one turned out using a dark blue bottom mat and then the top white mat. I saw several similar mat setups on here for this print and knew I had to copy them.

Finally, MacCarthys' What Once Was II, I went with a triple mat with a medium gold/brown bottom mat, light brown textured middle mat, and a dark brown top mat. The stain on the design of the frame has a little more red to it than I was hoping for, but I'm still really happy with it.

I'm thinking of swinging by the frame shop this week and pricing out a silver metal frame for the CA variant, a black metal frame for Thor, and a gold metal frame for IM2. I already have 3 sheets of 24x36 non-glare UV plexi, so all I'd buy from them is the frames, spacers, and acid-free backer.

I'd love to mat those suckers.... stupid, silly brain instantly got an idea:bang

Do share. :) I've been in the "Mat the Stouts" camp for a long while, but price-wise, sticking them in simple metal frames is easiest right now -- plus, I need to use the plexi I bought a while back, and it's only 24x36. If you have an awesome idea, however, please tell me about it!

Ive been going through that debate too. But I am more inclined to leave them now and just use a thicker moulding as you did. It makes a nice bold statement with the simplicity.

I do too, but none of those frames are archival -- the HBII has non-glare UV plexi on it, but that's it, and the others don't have anything special. They're also really really shallow, so shallow that when I tried to add spacers and replace the backing a while back, nothing wouldn't fit.

I think I might mat them in the end, but for now, metal frames are doable, and I can make them archival (unlike these Michael's frames).

Thanks! :) Someone on EB posted a Pan's right before me ("Framed Stuff Part 6" thread), and though I love my moulding, his is absolutely incredible!! It's as if it had been made specifically for the Pan's print. Unfortunately, he said they've discontinued it since his order. :(

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/th_IMG_0953.jpg (http://s910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/?action=view&current=IMG_0953.jpg) http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/th_IMG_0955.jpg (http://s910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/?action=view&current=IMG_0955.jpg)

All of these large frames used double-rings to hang, not wire. With this thing, it is really easy to make the wall holes in the right spot and also make sure they're level. You line up each of the outside black pieces with the rings on the frame, then put it against the wall where you want to hang the frame and push against the outside black pieces. The little tack on the back makes two marks on the wall, you put the nails in, and hang the print! I double-checked with a construction level after hanging, and they were spot on! I love this thing. $10 well spent. :)

This also came back from the framer with Pan, though it will go in the apartment in Austin. I could not for the life of me get a good close-up picture, so you get one pic that kinda shows the moulding, and another that is really dim but gives you an idea of the mat thickness.

Mind you... most of these would be intricate cutting/customization... so you would probably never pay for someone else to do it (would cost an arm and a leg... and sometimes they are not too adventurous.)
For the Thor... I would want to play around and use the constellations and having subtle color showing through and then probably some v-grooves.
Captain America... I would want to distress out the mat with 'swipes' like are on the print. Play around with different colored cores... could really have fun with that one.
Hellboy... I would want to mimic the detail work along the edge with the matting.

As for the color combos... not sure on those as I have never seen any of these in person.

Hahaha, the Blossom was never actually on the wall -- I never got around to attaching the hanging hardware. :oops It's ok, though, because I don't have anywhere to hang it right now. It needs to go above my turntable, but there's no room between that and my TV/center speaker in my current setup. It will probably have to wait until I get back to Austin. :)

Simple frame job to get Warmer Air (my first Geddes!) up on the wall as quickly as possible. 22x28 basic frame from Aaron Bros, taken to framer who cut an 8-ply white mat, hinged the print, and sealed the whole thing up. iPhone pics are horrible (lighting in my house is horrible too), but you get the idea. I haven't figured out the best spot to hang it yet, but there was a gap in my living room so it's going there for now. :P I love this print! :)

What exactly did you use to hang it since there is no lip in the slot?

Good ol' hammer and nails - well actually not nails, but these: http://www.lemhilumber.com/Grip-Rite--THS-Fluted-Shank-Masonry-Nails-_p_30638.html (except I used the 1.5" long version, got a box for around $8 at Lowe's).

Takes a little finagling to get them to rest inside the slot after you hammer them in, and I made sure to get them pretty deep into the wall so only about 1/4" of each is showing. Used three total spaced 7" apart on the wall, to distribute the weight more evenly. It's kind of a pain since if one of the nails is sticking out more than the others, and you try to hang the piece, it'll only rest on that one.

P.S. - "fluted shank" :row

You can get them at most local art stores. I get the smaller ones.

^^^^I buy all my mounting corners from: www.bagsunlimited.com

They have multiple different sizes and they also sell mounting strips for big prints where you need to hold down a big print mid-run....The are all mylar....I just bought 3 boxes of the 3" (100 per box) for a little over $40....They were offering a deal....

What size prints do you use 3" corners for? (Or did you mean to say you bought 3" mounting strips?)

I use the 3" corners for holding down all of my prints on the acid free boards before sliding them into the mylar sleeves before sliding all that mess into the flat file...Think my paper is safe enough? (Yes, I have a Type A personality!)

They do sell small corners, but I hate trying to insert the corners of my prints into them (easy to ding up the corners). With the large 3" corners, there is a flap that you can basically peel back out of the way when inserting the print to lessen corner ding possibilities...

How the hell do I frame this? It is a full size official 27"x39" event poster. I dont know how I should do it up. Suggestions?

Tried my hand at mat cutting for the first time tonight (with my sparkling new Logan Artist Elite cutter). I went from this:

Oh my god do I love this machine. I foresee lots and lots of matted 24x36 prints in my future. :jen

EDIT: Stupid uploader rotated my pic. Sorry. :(

That curved frame works extremely well with the space theme. Very clever.

It's an Ikea Odby frame -- large enough to frame 24x36 prints in them with around a 2" mat on all sides, but the included mats have openings that are too small. This was an "easy" way for me to get my feet wet with mat cutting, since I didn't have to cut the mats to the frame size -- I only had to cut the opening wider.

And it was someone in the EB framed stuff 6 thread who posted an Ansin Space Seed print in one of these frames and got my brain working. I want to frame Space Seed, Moon (by Tong), and THX 1138 in these same frames and hang the 4 prints together. Sweet sweet science fiction... I'm in love. ;)

I have one more of these Odby frames. Any suggestions as to what I should put in it? (Obviously, I've got Escape from Planet of Apes, Moon, and THX 1138, and I'm wondering what could go with the vintage and sci-fi feel I've got going on.)

Will Space Seed fit? :dunno

Yeah, but even though it was a Space Seed in this frame in my inspiration picture, I don't like the off-white paper with a white mat. The three I have in the frames so far are all white paper, and I don't want there to be an odd man out.

Here are some more prints. Getting things out of my file/portfolios and into frames makes me sooooo happy!

One is for a friend and one is for me. I just haven't decided which is which yet.

I also attached the Certificates of Authenticity from Tiny Showcase onto the back of each frame. I really like the way these turned out!

And some more, nothing fancy...

I can't really get a good picture of this, but the frame is black with the tiniest hint of red "rubbing" in the middle of the very sharply angled bevel. I think it fits the print perfectly. Now the trick is to figure out where I can hang both it and Mummy so they'll be a pair.

This would have been in a frame sooner, but emergencies at work had me working late most of the week -- and when I wasn't working, I was catching up on lost sleep. :p

As much as I love Escape from the Planet of the Apes, I love Star Trek II MUCH MUCH MORE, so Escape went back into the portfolio and Khan took its place. I only brought the variant back to my house from Austin (I don't really know why), but I'm wishing I'd brought the reg too so I could have seen what it looked like in this frame. I'll remedy that sometime next month; I'm sure it will look fantastically retro. :banana

Here is my living room "sci-fi" wall as it's progressed so far.

http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/th_wall1.jpg (http://s910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/?action=view&current=wall1.jpg) http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/th_wall2.jpg (http://s910.photobucket.com/albums/ac301/emac116/?action=view&current=wall2.jpg)

The pictures are shit, as usual, because I can't find the charger for my nice camera. :ohno The space to the right of THX will probably hold Danger's Star Trek: TMP print once I cut a mat for the last space frame.

I have two different Logan mat cutters... not sure on the exact models. I've been matting and framing for over 12 years now. Started in high school when I was in National Art Honor Society and it just kinda stuck with me.

I like that tan/ beige color for the top matte...highlights the print well...

Some framer said that your main matte should be the third main color in the art...seems to work
