I ordered 2 pinks without seeing the note about only one and got a shipping confirmation last night. I was going to e-mail them about it but I got shipping confirmation so decided to wait.
I saw that Don't Be Cruel auction...Doubt it will get a bidder. 4.5k or so isn't going to happen yet for 10. She would be better served breaking them up and slowly auctioning them off for that amount.

I can't comment on the price too much because I'm not too familiar with Brainwash and pricing trends (outside of EB) but if you look at the past bids it went from $999 to $1850 because of a bid from a buyer with no feedback. It reeks of shill bidding IMO. Then again, the last one supposedly sold for $2400 on EB.

I think a lot of the MBW stuff on ebay right now is really really overpriced.
2k for LIB is a lot. Sales were made under $400 for most of 2009. I guess that was then, and this is now. The last 4 have really went through the roof.
That being said, its an amazing print and I wish I had one!

I'm inclined to agree with you, but I do know that a lot of people are coming out of the woodwork to purchase MBW stuff...its possible you could have new ebayers popping up to buy stuff. having said that, i do agree, it looks shady.

I've been watching 2 things over the last month...
1st - The number of hits this thread gets a day... slowly been rising from 100, to 150, now around 200.
2nd - The number of items being listed on ebay. A while back it was only 15 or 20 then 30. Last month it was only about 45 and now we have about 60 as of last night.
The only thing I can track is how many ebay listings go unbid. Thats why EB needs to have a chart overlay with red dots of ebay listings that go unsold. Thats the missing trend.
GTG - back to monitoring MBW chatter... :shifty

ah, that's interesting statistics.
He's getting a lot of press because of the NYC and London shows, the LA show was a hit as well. You just never know when a artist is suddenly going to break into the mainstream. This poster could go for 2k tonight, and either 4 or 1 a year from now. But it is a sweet print.
and others are right, it does kinda seem like shady bidding. I know i had emailed the guy about the print and he said he had gotten a lot of offers so wanted to repost it (originially there was a buy it now, forget for how much, wish i had jumped on it though!).
Really torn, art pricing is such a touch and go thing. I guess we'll see how drunk i am when the auction ends tonight...

Definitely post-show for the rare ones. It'll depend for the other ones- if a lot of them were bought just to flip, there may be too many floating around to ever drive the price up further. That won't be a problem for the 5 golds or 15 pinks though.
McGinnisM
Dec 18, 2009, 12:26 PM
What if more are released at the showing though? How's that change things? Runs of under 50 freak me out because I always think there is demand for a rerun or offsets.

I'm not an art guru, but I think it could go either way. Could "hype" up the pre-show price, as well as drive the price up after (post-show).
He's definately different, and I am starting to get into some of his art work.

I saw that last night. I can't imagine someone paying close to his asking price. Maybe $200 tops?
If the Mona was screenprinted it would be. A cheap, thin stock promotional copy that has creases in the image area just isn't worth much. What would you do with it? The creases are really obvious since its such a thin stock.
Maybe I am wrong though if someone wants to collect it just to have it. I have to assume it may be made into a screenprint into the future, much like World Class ones were given before the screenprint was made.

Seriously what do you expect? The people behind MBW are a serious operation, very busy and not a joke!
People stop deluding yourself thinking that the artist sits on his bum all day waiting for us to come up with lame ideas to commission. If you really love the work and not the money it brings from flipping them, then you would not even be thinking that way. There are plans for a ton of work to be displayed in the future, I think trying to commission a Dave Matthews Band portraiture is not in the uppermost of his mind at this point. :christy

I could be wrong but the last time i checked MBW is a business and a brand name. I emailed him with a business opportunity and expected some kind of a response. i wasnt being a dick and it was a pretty long email explaining what i was looking for. I dont think that i would expect someone to email me back after saying hey will you paint this for me but if i where an artist and someone put some time into a proposition i would look at it and at least say sorry i am very busy right now. Lame? I think if he did a Dave poster it would probably be a little more collectable than a run DMC or kanye print. Why would I email him about a commission if i didnt love the work. Do you think i would honestly pay to have him do that then turn around and sell it?

I was thinking about the NYC print while I was out last night... You have to give it up to them for creating a print that has something for everyone! I know I said it before but a print run of 320 with variants at every price range to appeal to every type of collector... pure genius! So much better than if it was just one print with a run of 320... awesome! Im excited to see more! Anyone get the nyc print yet? post pictures!

I could be wrong but the last time i checked MBW is a business and a brand name.
The value of his brand in more important than the sale of one OG or one print run. Even though I'm sure a DMB print would sell out with quickness, I just don't think it fits his brand, the majority of his fanbase or his prior work.
i wasnt being a dick and it was a pretty long email explaining what i was looking for.
Brief e-mails to busy people/studios are more likely to get a response.
That being said, I'd love to see you get what you want. Just don't think it will ever happen. Also not trying to be a dick, just a pragmatist.

They were lying and or exaggerating about most of the stuff being gone. TONS of stuff there. I didn;t feel comfortable pulling out my bb and taking pics but definitely some cool stuff to see. I did notice that on some of the high dollar pieces like the canvas Legend and triple bowie image piece that the paint appeared to be cracking due to thick application. The Yes We Can looked to be identical to the image of the limited edition print except that it was on canvas as did the Superman Obama. Other notable pieces were the Love is the Answer 1/1, a cool looking chocolate vandal 1/1, and a sick Disorder 1/1 (in the stairway if you goto the Gallery). It looked like the MJ record piece was sold and maybe the Kurt Cobain piece (since it was downstairs on the floor), but everything else looked to be on the wall and for sale. I didn't ask about any prices. I'm not a huge fan of the Charlie Chaplan LIB like others are. Also looks like MBW did a lot of writing and personalizing on the back of the pieces on top of the normal thumbprint and date.

It was implied to me when I spoke to them on the phone that it may not be worth my while to come down because so many pieces have been sold. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought she meant nothing would bnot as many pieces would be on the walls. She could have very well meant, "you won't be able to drop $50k on as many pieces because most have been sold"...in which case I understand and giggle.

Thanks guys for the heads up.
I had traded him three prints for four of his. I had two One More Chance's- a mint one and a near-mint one. I accidentally sent him the near-mint instead of mint one. Once he PM'ed me, it was an easy fix. I am just mailing him the mint one Monday and paying him to ship the other back.
Not a big deal but he had to go and make a thread about it instead of just PM'ing me first. Kind of annoying- he is so quick to create a thread versus waiting to PM me but not so quick updating the thread that it has been resolved. But it is all taken care of now.
And I am getting my NYC prints this week along with a LIFE and Montana. So, it'll be a good MBW Christmas week for me. :sadie

Not a big deal but he had to go and make a thread about it instead of just PM'ing me first. Kind of annoying- he is so quick to create a thread versus waiting to PM me but not so quick updating the thread that it has been resolved. But it is all taken care of now.
Why people do this is beyond me. How bout you try to resolve the problem first before bad mouthing someone? :dunno

wow i just read Bandana's retort...seems a bit dramatic. I can see each of those things happening, but he views everything as the worst thing in the world and as if someone was out to fuck him over in the worst way.
Basically if you want to take the drama out of his post: Kantiana shipped a bit later than he did, not a huge deal. And he put the wrong print in the tube, but has admitted the error and is doing what he has to do to fix it.
Sounds like a decent transaction.

Thanks guys for the support. EB is like Lord of the Flies over there. Within an hour of reading his PM, the issue was resolved and I'll end up paying about $70 in shipping to do it. Which is no big deal, since it was my fault.
It wasn't shipped late, USPS just didn't scan it until it left the country. So, it didn't show up in the system the day I mailed it but the day it left the country.
And yeah, I am hoping for a new MBW print soon.

I would think either of those two DMB posters should get some interest (but I guess a MBW collector would also have to be a big DMB collectors as well). You can probably sell either of them for some decent cash to purchase a MBW print you want to get.
We may have already done this, but lets play a game called, "List all of the MBW pieces you own and whether or not they are for sale or trade". I've got:
Le Bistro
Obama vs. McCain - For Trade
Love if the Answer (unsigned)

Never for trade:

Le Bistro
Mona Lisa Barcode
World Class (free edition)
Not actively seeking a trade, but not untouchable:
Two's Company
Surreal Dali
Ben Franklin
Red Hitchcock

great price on those compared to normal. personally I think they are WAY overpriced still, especially considering you have to buy more inserts.
Other companies 18x24's cost half this sale price (like 35 bucks, I'm sure many of ya have them) and come ready to hold 40+ prints. Since they are the only game in town making the larger size I guess we can't complain :bang.
personally, I'm going to hold out for a flat file in the near future.

I use the 19x25 alvin print protectors for most of my dmb stuff but the MBW stuff I have in BIG sleeves which are stacked in a corner. So for $141 I can store all my MBW stuff safely with plenty of room for another 10+ MBW prints. No brainer for me, but I guess it depends on what you need it for. I don;t think a portfolio this size a good idea if you want to store DMB prints unless you;re gonna spend the time to mylar corner every poster. To your point on the flat file, you;re gonna have to put them all in sleeves (if you havent already) before you shove them in the flat file anyway.
I pay $9 for a double sided sleeve with acid free divider (for the 19x25s) so ten 24x36 sleeves and the portfolio for $141 seems reasonable to me.

I agree... never been a fan of the portfolios even for my own art work. I have a 64" flat file (a monster) at work and in the drawer I have a 40 page portfolio with student work... Open the bottom drawer and you can flip the pages... fool proof but over time the pages get ware marks on the and the art rubs and moves every time you turn the page...

Im not going to pretend to know the whole story, but from what i have read i agree.
If a price was set and it was sold it is the new owners right to tear up and defacate on the print just as much as it his right to resell it.
Granted, if i were to do that, i wouldnt use a story like that to better my chances of obtaining the print, but some people are just shitbags.
After a trip to the convenience store one time a dirtbag college roomate of mine left me with some words of wisdom after spilling 44 oz. of fruit punch on my tan colored interior (with a southern twang) "you win some you lose some". the asshole didnt even try to clean it up, man did i hate that kid.

I had people telling me they would go higher and pay more than my highest offer. I really wanted to honor the price and I thought I was doing he right thing. He Sid it would be framed fast and even sent me a picture of his supposed 33rd street it would go next to. I hve no problem selling it for 700 and would do it again. now that I know what I know though I will never hook up someone I don't know again. Ill take the higher offer and not think twice about it. He won't even leave me feedback in EB he ignores me. I like most everyone here but I see how far some people take this stuff. This site is so much better than EB

Yeah, unfortunately that is probably on the low end for a x/5 PP edition today. I don't think he will get 1.25 though for it. I could see 800-1k today. Who knows though, it is a great print.

The 33rd Street print on EB has now gone.
Pollock up for $1500.
The tipping point is near...

I really like the pollock, just didn;t have the cash when it originally dropped. Now its probably out of reach cash wise unless I trade for it. Anyone want to work out any trades (i posted my MBW list in this thread recently). Let me know.

So when Legend came out I got two dark browns. I kept one and mailed the other to my dad for his birthday (or was it father's day?). So I decided to use AF to frame it for him for Christmas. I took the standard brainwash dimensions off of EB (22 x 30) and ordered the frame with the intention of floating it over a black acid free mat. Well, Legend is 22.5 x 30, which threw off all of my planning. It still looks good, but I couldn't float it. I'll post pictures later.

Looks great Tony. I would spend the time to really get the framer to match that blue and then put some kind of black frame (maybe ornate?). Post up the pics when you get it up on the wall.
