I saw other threads about Josh Keyes, but they were for specific prints. I thought we could have a general Josh Keyes thread.

I decided that I have to get one of his limited edition prints at some point, but I don't want to pay the secondary market prices. I love how clean and detailed they are. Anyone know when he might have some prints for sale?

Also, who owns any of his prints and what do you own? Post pictures please. :thumbsup

He had an exhibition going until the 13th of February. Do you think there is any chance some limited edition prints will come out of it?

They already did. Shedding and Hibernate were released with a run of 50 each. They weren't dropped though, only sold to people on a presale list from the gallery. Not many people got one that wanted one.

I went to the show in NYC, it was awesome. They did a show book which is really nice and includes a small print as well. It was about $90 or so and can be bought through the Jonathan Levine Gallery website.

I'm jealous you got to go to the exhibition, I bet it was incredible.

Have any of you guys gone on his site and looked at the sketch book? I glanced through it or like 5 minutes and its go some amazing shots.

There are a few pics with nature books where I think he gets a lot of his work from

Definitely incredible. Lots of good artwork. You had to e-mail the gallery whenever the show was announced a long time ago. I wasn't on the list and didn't get a print unfortunately.

I joined the gallery's mailing list a little while ago. I'll have to remember about emailing them the next time he has an exhibition.

Fuck me his stuff is impossible to buy when it's released. Apparently this was released as a giclee with a run of 50. I would have loved to own this piece. I guess only certain people were emailed and given the chance to buy for $400.

So has anyone here been on the galleries preorder or preview lists? I emailed Jonathan Levine Gallery and David Smith Gallery to be put on their lists for Josh's next show and they put me on them. Josh's website says it will be this fall, but Jonathan Levine Gallery said it probably won't happen until 2011. So does anyone know exactly how these lists work or how the prints are allocated/chances of getting one? I just hope some day I can get one of his limited edition prints for face value. I love his stuff, but dropping $1000+ in the secondary market for the prints I would want is a bit much for me.

I don't know much about them. The "big" ones only get released to the galleries' waiting lists. So there isn't even a drop for those.

From Josh:

That painting was a key piece in the LeVine show and also has an important personal meaning for me. I am always a little wary of sharing my intended interpretations with people as most everyone has his or her own idea of what is going on in a picture. But I think I should share my thoughts about this piece with you.

If you are like me you are starting to take notice of your body beginning to creak more often than it used to. Your memory is not as sharp as it used to be. You are basically on the door step to mid life. Like the car you drove as a teenager you still have it but it is getting rusty and needs more maintenance than it used to, and you can't trade it in, not yet until the brilliant scientists perfect transhuman technology.

So for me the piece is foreshadowing a state of being that is on the horizon, and common to all. It is about becoming comfortable with letting go of the body or specifically identifying with the physical body. The humming birds could represent the personality, spirit, or soul. In a nutshell, it is an honoring and letting go of the body, realizing that it is temporal and its ok to watch it go over time, and to turn the focus of our identity on that bright energy within, for me I often feel my mind is like a flock of humming birds, darting this way and that to ideas and emotions. The birds are saying goodbye to the body.

Yeah, the more I think about Last Kiss, the more sad it feels. Josh's intended interpretation basically confims that for me even if he didn't intend it to be that sad. This is probably the first print where I'll be taking it straight to the framer after it arriving.

Man, I just don't get these prints.

Personal taste I guess. I love his extreme attention to detail. He does everything he can to make it look exactly like his scene is literally sliced out of reality. Plus, his prints look just like a painting. I know it's a giclee which is obviously going to be very accurate, but it really looks amazing in terms of quality. Mostly what catches my eye about the artwork is, like I said, the way he makes them as accurate as possible. For example the refraction in the water. I think taking a slice out of reality like that is an interesting concept. I like how he interprets the intersection of man and nature in most of his prints and how he executes it. It's just a personal taste thing though for the most part. My wife isn't a big fan of his work either, but to me it's easily been the artwork I get the most excited for.

McGinnisM
Aug 5, 2010, 08:43 AM
I can see the "realness" of the work, and the detail of the work, but I guess I just look at it never wanting to hang a deer, moose, whale, whatever else in my house.

I was kind of the same way. I really didnt get the appeal. I do like some of his designs but didnt think i would hang them in my house. So when these went on sale the other day, i figured ill likely never have a chance of owning one of his prints for face value, lets give it a whirl.

After i got it I had it flattening for a couple of days and i noticed everytime i walked by it, i would stop and just look....for a while. It was much nicer than i expected and i like the image more and more everytime i look at it. I like how it initially looks very simple, but the more you look at it, you realize its quite complex.

I want to see some framed ones. I think this one will make the wall. Simple white frame, floated image with black mat would look perfect i think.

EDIT: And your from MI, how could you not want the bolded.

I'm right there with ya Mike. Keyes is one artist I can honestly say I dislike. I usually either really like an artist or am neutral, but with Keyes, there's something about his stuff that just puts me off. I wish I could explain it but it's really hard. More power to the guy though, he commands a big following.

I love his work because I'm a big nature guy, and of course Keyes is a big nature artist.

The detail he has in his prints are incredible, the printing is amazing, and the one large piece I have looks like a painting. Plus it's cool that they all have a deeper meaning.

I just wish his pieces weren't so damn expensive... I will say I'm pumped about this show, not sure I'll be able to score or afford a print but it'd be nice to just get one

I love the messages in his work too. I was on the no thanks side not a few months ago in terms of buying his stuff as I never thought I'd actually hang it since it didn't really fit with what I thought our "style" was. Plus it's so darn expensive and I'll be honest, I never thought I'd spend more than $40 on art until a few months ago. :lol

Then I saw Guardian, (late to the party, I know) which absolutely drew me in and I just had to have it (enough for me to lose my skull lol) and I love what Josh said about the print/series:

"The new work explores a combination of different ideas. The Guardian series calls attention to the impact each individual has on the environment. The choices we make in the grocery store, or deciding to take public transportation or ride a bike, and water use, create a ripple effect that indirectly has an effect on the way natural resources are used, processed and transported. Through conscientious action and gradual modifications in our everyday routines and behavior, the individual can become empowered, creating a positive and lasting change. I chose to use my own hands as a staring point, and to see them as extensions of the earth. The idea that each of us is a guardian of the environment through our actions we could potentially be destroyers as well, which today seems to be more often the case. For me the paintings serve as a reminder or meditation on this idea."

Anyway, I then started looking more closely at his other stuff and found myself noticing more details and messages instead of just seeing a deer or a whale like I did before (lol). I found it at times sad, and at times beautiful and at times inspirational and now I'm just hooked. :)

I agree. From the description of all the prints in that pdf link, I think some of them could be very interesting. One of them is supposed to be birds reassembling the deer's skeleton after it has died. Others involve a lion being born out of the skeleton or something. Could be interesting.

I am pleased to share my new collection of paintings with you.

The inspiration for these paintings came from an old alchemists engraving from around the 16th century. The engraving consists of multiple images that illustrate a personified narrative of the chemical transformation of metals moving from one solid to disintegration and reconfiguration. The iconographic device used in this engraving is that of the archetypal king whose power is shifts between tyranny and freedom.

This series of images of this alchemical engraving enchanted my imagination, and has become a grounding source for this current body of work and the work that is to come. A story evolved for me surrounding the theme of death and rebirth at the core is a meditation on transformation. These ideas had to find expression through my existing lexicon of myth and imagery, so I began to invent and develop a cast of characters and situations that for me served to interpret the essence of my source material, the "old wine new bottle" approach.

With all of my imagery they stand as metaphors, not event action or event is to be taken literally. The depiction of death or dying in this series could be seen as a relationship, the ending of a job, an inner life change. The hyenas could be that group of bullies you may have encountered after school, or the negative critical voice we all have at times in our head that keep us from living out our dreams. One could think of this work as an expression of the individual personality. We all have within us the potential for love and compassion as well as aggressive tendencies, we as a culture are capable of great communal achievement as well as the destructive and tyrannical manifestations that we have sadly seen throughout history. It is not to say that one is good and one bad, it is to acknowledge that these energies and drives are hardwired into our psychology and physiology.

The other exciting news I have to share with you is that there will be a print release for this show.

Please contact the David B Smith Gallery for more information about the release and if you have not done so already sign up to receive the gallery newsletter.

Thank you for your interest and support of my work, feel free to swing by the Josh Keyes Forum or visit my facebook page.

Just got that too. Interesting that he says "a print release". Since we thought it was 2 print releases, maybe he means there will be 1 "general" online print release (like Last Kiss) and then a second exclusive print release for the people on "the list".

Yes, Sowers would be great. I think there's a small chance it will happen, but for sure it would be the type where it's a run of 50 and only sold to the people on "the list". Meaning it will be nearly impossible to obtain and will for sure be between $1000 and $1500 (or more potentially) in the after market. I had the Gallery add my name to the list back in April, but I'm sure I'm way, way down on it. I'm not sure if the waiting list carries over from exhibition to exhibition or not though. I have a feeling it might.

hirschy75

But you're probably right about how it'd be on sale, if it ever was

ali815
Nov 2, 2010, 12:53 PM
So I have a question...

With this whole gallery list thing...I've never added my name to anything but for future reference, do you just ask the galleries to be added to a list for a specific artist (or all artists) right when a show is announced? I assume this "list" is different than the mailing list on the website, so is it to be OG's or to buy the released print, or depends? For example the rumor in this case is that 1 is an online drop and 1 is a waitlist "drop"?

Was this CO Keyes show announced like in 08 or something? How did people hear about it...just through the gallery or on message boards? :lol yeah, lots of questions...I was backreading the Guardian thread and it was in 08 that they were all, yeah so and so has a show in 2010 and I'm already already on that list. :shock

I am so new to this it's like a culture shock lol

Found this post from David Smith (the gallery owner) on Josh's forums:

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to address the discussion regarding the gallery list for LAG/DBSG.

We have a general list that started in early 2007, and we are working our way through it. However, it is standard practice for a gallery to take their collector base into consideration. For example, there are a few clients that regularly purchase significant works of art and have established relationships with the gallery. It is our obligation to provide them with the opportunity to acquire work from artists within the gallery program. Our focus is to place original work into the collections of people that intend to enjoy their art over the years to come.

I highly recommend a great book called "Collecting Contemporary" by Adam Lindemann. It offers some thoughtful insight on the subject from gallerists, collectors, institutions etc.

We would also like to thank Charlie at OKOK Gallery for all of his assistance throughout the "Mist" exhibition.

Best,
Dave

So the list started in 2007 and they just work their way through it. I've also heard of people who have been on the list for 3 years and never been offered to purchase. Essentially this means I'll never make it through that list. Also, it seems up until Lifted, most of the prints were offered through Josh's forum in different ways (minimum number of posts, lottery by active users, etc.) and just regular online sales on their site. I'm still not sure how Lifted was allocated exactly, but in general, the prints were made available through relatively conventional means (i.e. not a list). Who knows how it will be done now though. His popularity seems to be only growing exponentially as time goes on.

I'd say $250 maybe. Last Kiss was $200 if I remember right. With this being a more general print release (not the super exclusive kind), I'd guess it will be more reasonable. $300 at the very most. ali815

No kidding? I guess that's what kinda cool about art! :) It's funny cause at least to me, it's one of his few that seemed straightforward (I haven't figured out Sowers yet still lol) but maybe it's because I don't read his descriptions (besides Guardian) and have no idea if there is a theme?

Anyway, to me, Howl is the the wolf (yeah the antlers threw me) crying out as he is slowly becoming extinct. The other animals (fox, squirrels, rabbit) are still there...for the time being anyway, as he is slowly fading away and there's nothing he can do about it but cry. I took the wood part to mean he is becoming a part of the earth (at first I thought it might be like petrified wood...so he's like a fossil, but decided that didn't quite make sense). In my head, I could almost see a time lapse where in another picture (not literally another painting) he is entirely a piece of wood...no longer around and like the pile of bones, he's just a shadow of what he used to be.

hirschy75
Nov 8, 2010, 10:34 AM
That is what's awesome about art. We all have a different way of viewing things.

I agree with the wood, becoming part of the earth thing, even though it's difficult to believe it seems like a good meaning. I mean why else would the animal be part wood? Plus it's howling out leaves (from the looks of it) just like a tree drops it's leaves throughout the year.

But I don't get the title or why Josh used an elk instead of a wolf since elks can't howl.

I think Sowers is just that the animals are reclaiming the land for themselves after the humans have disappeared. The big buffalo are leading the way for the rest of the animals. The man-made elements are being reclaimed by nature as seen by the grass growing through/over the asphalt with each step of the buffalo. There might be deeper meanings elsewhere in it, but I think that's at least the "big picture" meaning of it.

On EB the listed price for Sowers is shown as $350. Not sure where that came from, but good to know. Pretty much exactly in the price range we expected, maybe on the higher end.

What does the run size have to do with it? Flipability or are you expecting the after market to be cheaper? I mean if that's what the print costs and the market will bear it, I'm not sure what the run size has to do with it.

Maybe he just doesn't want to pay so much for such a high run. Not sure that's the case but there are a few people over on eb that have said similar things in the past.

Flibability wise I see it worse than last kiss was so I'd say in response to flipability I'm hoping it failips so I can get one cheaper than cost. Don't judge... stranger things have happened

Well, it's great to own a nice piece, but its more than that to me, it's an investment as well.

When im dropping this much cash on a print (plus take into consideration
the small fortune it will take to properly frame it) I want to make sure my investment will hold up.

That said, yes, I will wait and see how these do on the secondary market.. .

I imagine the secondary market will be pretty soft for these, so you should be fine. I guess the print run doesn't bother me. I'd be framing this print regardless and I doubt I'd ever sell a framed print.

I'm on this end of the stick though like you said to each their own. That's the best part about art - different strokes for different folks. I would've paid a lot more than $500/600 for my Guardian and I look at it at least once a day. I have a folder on my laptop of all the different framed Guaridan's I've found online for ideas and inspirations for my own frame job one day. On the other hand I watched Sowers drop in stock from about 300 (when I looked) to zero and made a personally easy decision to pass. I wish I had it now so I could trade it and have 2 Guardians though :lol ;)

No word that I know of. I'm guessing we won't see a print till the April show

On the note of Sowers there's a lot of talk on EB about this not working for floating because it will eventually bend and curl which really sucks, anyone here gonna attempt a float?

Bluecow003
Nov 17, 2010, 11:55 AM
Don't get me wrong, I think Guardian is a fantastic print, but any time I'm spending over $400 on a print I have to ask myself how much other good art or framing that $400+ will buy. I would have jumped on Guardian in a heartbeat if I was around when it first went on sale from the gallery. There are just very few pieces of art anymore that I'm willing to pay secondary market prices for. There is just too much good art out there that can be bought for face. Plus, considering I have about 20 prints or so that I definitely want to get framed (and not sit in a portfolio like my other 75 prints or so), spending $500+ just to make that list even longer seemed like that money could be better spent on framing the art I already have.

Also, it's not really about Sowers comparing to Guardian either. I got Sowers for face value. I bought it to keep, not trade.

As for framing Sowers, I was considering floating it. I'm going to do my best to flatten it. Probably a month or so. If it still has any curl after that I won't float it for sure. Even if I do get it flat, I'm thinking my framer won't want to float it for fear of it curling later on. It won't bother me too much though. I think Keyes fans make too big of deal over floating his prints.

For me, floating a deckled edge print like a Keyes or MBW on a dark mounting board is the only way to go. The deckled edges look too good to hide. Of course, on my Thunder, I was unable to do this and am regretting it.

Even if it means it will curl over time? The Sowers print is 48" wide. Going to be pretty tough to get a print that large not to curl.

Why weren't you able to float Thunder?

So were you there when they were filming it or did that go on the year before? The movie came out in 1999. I always thought that school was just ridiculous, not in a bad way. It just didn't seem like it could be a real high school.

It was filmed the summer before my freshman year.

Yeah it's pretty crazy that it's actually a school. We had classes all the way up in the turret on the 4th floor. At the time it was hard to appreciate the beauty of the school when you're climbing up and down the steps for 4 years. There is also cool underground passages and a basement way below ground level that had the basketball court and a back swimming pool. The cafeteria looked out over the bay and it was kinda surreal to have lunch and watch ships sail by and stuff. It recently had a 100 million dollar remodel and I'm so jealous because it is state of the art and beautiful. :(
